PRESS RELEASE

Phnom Penh, December 5, 2018

The 8th National Forum on Volunteerism and the International Volunteer Day 2018 celebration event will be jointly organized by Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) and United Nations Volunteers (UNV) in close partnership with civil society (represented by VolCam) and the private sector. These events will take place on December 5, 2018, at Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC) in Phnom Penh and 20 more schools across the capital city. This will become the 9th time where International Volunteer Day was celebrated in Cambodia jointly with the National Forum on Volunteerism.

The overall aim of the events is to promote volunteerism throughout Cambodia, demonstrating volunteerism as a viable and critical vehicle capacitating and engaging youth for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Cambodia. These events will also celebrate the nationalized theme, “Volunteer for Our Communities,” which is closely aligned with the global theme of International Volunteer Day 2018, “Volunteers Build Resilient Communities.”

The National Forum on Volunteerism will be opened in the morning at ITC with a welcoming speech from MoEYS, followed by speeches from representatives from UN and UNV. Presentations of volunteering experiences by youth volunteers and a panel discussion on volunteerism with various volunteer involving organizations will follow to share both hands-on experience and operational knowledge on volunteerism to the public.

The International Volunteer Day 2018 event will officially be launched with the closing of the National Forum on Volunteerism. This event will take a unique approach of celebrating volunteerism by reaching out to a total of 1,000 participants through 20 simultaneous volunteerism sharing sessions in 15 universities and 5 high schools across Phnom Penh. The sharing sessions will be led by both local and international volunteers from 10 organizations in VolCam, a network of international and local volunteer service agencies and volunteer involving organizations in Cambodia.
